JANET MARSH – LEA GOVERNOR

I have been a governor at Sharmans Cross Junior School since 1993 and, currently, I serve on Curriculum Committee and the Headteacher’s Performance Management Committee.

My experience as a governor spans some 27 years and covers a variety of schools, first in London and then in Solihull. I have always been interested in education, both formal education and lifelong learning/training, and my own career pathway has been interesting and varied
as a result of this. I became a governor because wanted to contribute my own skills and experience to school through the strategic management role of a governor. And, as a manager in industry who recruited staff, I wanted to have some involvement in the education of the young people we would later be employing.

As far as my own career is concerned, I spent nearly 35 years in full-time employment, mainly in the gas industry first in R&D and later in more general management roles. In 2006 I decided to slow down and, since then, I have been employed part-time at the 6th Form College, Solihull. This has given me an insight into another aspect of education and has allowed me to
pursue more non-remunerative activities including being a magistrate, sitting on Solihull Schools Forum and being a governor at a local infants’ school and at the 6th Form College.

Apart from walking, my interests are mostly sedentary and I enjoy the theatre, reading and just socialising. During summer months, I love spending Sundays, and now an occasional weekday, watching Warwickshire Cricket Club at Edgbaston. Winter months see me at St Andrews, as one of the faithful band of season-ticket holders “Singin’ the Blues”.
