Governing Body
Fiona McGruer
I have been a parent governor at Sharmans Cross Junior School since November 2009. My daughter had started Year 3 in September 2009. I was initially interested in taking up the role as I was keen to be involved in a productive way with the school, not just judge it from the school gates.
I have spent my working life in the NHS. I initially trained as a general nurse at Kings College Hospital in London and subsequently trained as a psychiatric nurse at The Maudsley Hospital, London. I also gained a degree in Social Policy from the London School of Economics,
While working as a psychiatric nurse I trained as a psychoanalytic pyschotherapist as I felt this was a particularly useful way for me to understand the problems of human beings.
Clinically and managerially in my career I have worked in some particularly challenging clinical services with some troubled and disturbed individuals. As a result of this experience I completed a Masters degree last year in ‘Psycho-analytic approaches to the organization’. This helped to develop my interest in the functioning of organizations both at a conscious and
unconscious level.
In my day job I work in a large mental health trust and have senior management responsibility for mental health services for young people.
To conclude, I bring a sophisticated understanding of organizational performance and a skill of overcoming problems in a pragmatic way.
